Mechanical team
The Mechanical Team is currently developing a human-scale Savonius vertical axis wind turbine. A simple, low-emission solution for capturing wind energy. From the outset, our aim has been to design a system that’s both practical and sustainable, using accessible materials and fabrication methods.
We’re now in the final stages of machining and assembly. Once complete, we’ll collaborate with the Electrical team to integrate the turbine’s monitoring and energy storage systems. Hardware completion is expected by November 2025, followed by full system testing.
This project has offered valuable hands-on experience in mechanical design, manufacturing, and interdisciplinary teamwork, and we’re excited to see it come to life.
THIS YEAR’S GOALS
Complete final assembly of Wind Turbine prototype
Integrate sensor monitoring system and energy storage system into build
Conduct robust testing, analyze results, and iterate design as necessary
Work with Building Design and ELEC to produce implementation plan for Wind Turbine in the SMRT Project.
